Hypertension -Genetic or Environmental Origin?

Abstract
Despite spectacular advances in elucidationg the pathophysiological mechanisms that control blood pressure levels and conomitant improvements in treatment as well as voluminous and enthusiastic research, we are still powerless to prevent the rise
in
blood pressure that is so characteristic a feature of oaging in modern societies. This is because there has been very little progress in our understanding of its etiology.
The role of genetic factors and the influence of environment in the genesis of essential hypertension have been under intensive investigation for several decades.
However, neither the genetic factor nor environmental influences is sufficient enough to explain fully the etiology of the disease.
This paper reviews some of the study results on the role of genetic and environmental factors in genesis of hypertension and discusses the possible mothodological erros that might have been involved in conduction the studies.
Difficulties in selection genetically homogeneous population, documentetion the environmental (cultural) exposures, and standardizing the measurement of blood pressures are also discussed for better interpretation of the study results.
